It’s coming up to that time of year again and the Junior Film Fleadh has an early Christmas present in store for you. On Saturday 19^th November at 12.00 noon in the Town Hall Theatre The JFF will host a very special preview of the family animated film Santa’s Apprentice.

This wonderful family film tells the story of an aging Santa who, as his retirement approaches, is reluctant to leave the role which has brought so much joy to children the world over, but rules are rules and he must train someone to replace him. The lucky winner, to be chosen from among millions of children, must be named Nicholas, be an orphan and have a pure heart. On the other side of the planet, there is a little boy who is a perfect match, but his lack of self-confidence and fear of heights make him a poor contestant. Will Santa agree to step down, and help his apprentice take his place?

This magical animation is an ideal way to get into the Christmas spirit and will enchant children and, let’s be honest, adults of all ages. So get your hand-knit woolly jumpers (reindeer design optional), those socks your auntie gave you last year and kick off the festive season early with this very special screening of Santa’s Apprentice.

Santa’s Apprentice is a co-production of Cartoon Saloon, Avril Stark Entertainment and Gaumont.
Released in France in 2010.  Due for theatrical release in Ireland.

Tomm Moore is taking part in Grand Appeal, the unique artwork auction being organised by Aardman Studios in the UK. The auction will raise funds towards an Echocardiogram Appeal to support the Cardiac Ward at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Tomm designed and painted this watercolour of Aisling which can be viewed and bid on here.

Bridges is an exciting series of multi-cultural and inter-cultural books for children aged 6+.

The Reading Association of Ireland, at their bi-annual book awards, honoured the four authors of O Brien Press’ “Bridges” series with a merit award for their books.

The beautiful illustrations were drawn by Cartoon Saloon’s; Marie Thorhauge, Ross Stewart and Ray Forkan.

The O’Brien Press wins Special Merit Award at the Reading Association of Ireland (RAI) Children’s Book Awards 2011

The O’Brien Press, Ireland’s leading independent publisher, has been awarded an RAI Special Merit Award for its 2009 series of multi-cultural children’s books, the Bridges series.

This groundbreaking series addresses a growing need for books which celebrate the changing make-up of the Irish classroom and Irish society in general, for young readers. It consists of four charming, stand-alone stories that introduce multi-cultural children, families and traditions and are perfect for use at home or in the classroom. All four are eye-catchingly illustrated by the award-winning Cartoon Saloon.

In his presentation of the award to The O’Brien Press, Finian O’Shea, Chair of the Reading Association of Ireland, said:

‘These books are true to their title … bridges! These bridges have two way traffic; the bringing of other cultures into the Irish classroom with an authentic voice of Irishness and also the voice of the new Irish cultures, which are becoming part of who we now are so that books build on mutual acknowledgment and respect. The O’Brien Press are to be commended for bringing such wonderful books into the Irish market and into the hands of their intended readership.’

This is the second award nomination this year for Peter Prendergast, author of The Romanian Builder, who was also shortlisted for the Bisto Children’s Book of the Year Award 2011 for his poignant novel for older children, Dancing in the Dark. The other authors in the series are well-known children’s writer Eithne Massey, author of The Dreaming Tree, Natasha Mac A’Bháird, author of Olanna’s Big Day and poet and children’s writer Enda Wyley, author of I Won’t Go to China.

In a first for the RAI Awards, all four O’Brien Press authors were presented with awards on the night for being shortlisted, with the Special Merit Awards given to the publishers responsible for the shortlisted titles. Publisher Michael O’Brien accepted the O’Brien Press’s award and commented:

‘This award recognises the importance of a unique publishing project, realised by a large number of different contributors. At this moment, as I have the honour of receiving the RAI award, two Korean publishers are competing to buy the rights to translate and publish the Bridges series there – another wonderful bridge, this one from Ireland to Asia.’

About the RAI Awards:

The biennial RAI Children’s Book Awards were launched at the association’s annual conference in 1985, with the primary objective of encouraging the publication of quality children’s books in Ireland. It was the first such award in Ireland, and is presented for books written by Irish authors and published in Ireland.

About the authors:

Eithne Massey is the author of the children’s novels The Secret of Kells, The Silver Stag of Bunratty and the brand new Where the Stones Sing, set in Christ Church Cathedral. She has also written Best-loved Irish Legends, a collection of favourite legends, which was published in 2009. She lives between Dublin and Brittany.

Peter Prendergast was born in Dublin in 1964. He works in Dublin as a schoolteacher.  His novel for older children, Dancing in the Dark, was shortlisted for the Bisto Children’s Book of the Year Award in 2011.

Natasha Mac A’Bháird combines freelance writing and editing with looking after her twin girls. She is also the author of The Irish Bride’s Survival Guide. This is her first book for children.

Enda Wyley is an author and a poet and has had several books published including Boo and Bear in the O’Brien Press Panda Cubs series and The Silver Notebook for readers aged 10+.
