A bewitching animated fairytale for Children and adults alike.

This vibrant animation is a spirited retelling of the provenance of Ireland’s mosted cherished artefact, the Book of Kells. With the Viking hordes approaching, the monks of Kells are forced to turn their attention from transcripbing manuscripts to building barricades. The future of the precious book is in jeopardy and it falls to Brendan, young nephew of the abbot Cellach, to save the day.

The Secret of Kells is Cartoon Saloon’s first feature film and was directed by Tomm Moore (Check out his Secret of Kells Blog) with Nora Twomey as Co-director. Nominated for an Academy Award in 2009 for best animated feature, the Secret of Kells has screened and won awards in major festivals worldwide . DVD’s and BluRays will be available in the US and Australia very soon . Optimum releasing have acquired the UK rights.

Some Nice things people have said about our first feature:

Irish Times - “an entity of considerable beauty and originality…..Stunning! A cascade of light, color and wonder burst from the screen” ***
Irish Independent - “ambitious and classy animation … a real and rare pleasure” ****
Metro - “candy for the eyes…great voice acting and haunting soundtrack,” ****
The Star - “truly enchanting…a breath of fresh air.” ****
www.movies.ie: “ a unique animated movie … beautifully made … has a magical other-worldly feel, with a script and visuals that reminded me of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies (Spirited away etc..)… puts other 3D movies with bigger budgets to shame.” ****
Sunday Tribune - “exquisitely realised” 4/5
Screen International - “Certain to draw fans… Visually ravishing … magic”
Le Monde - “A visual universe of true splendor that holds the spectator from beginning to end in a continuous state of awakening.
Variety – “Luscious to behold”
Twitch – “A gorgeously realized fable about the power of imagination and artto thrive even in the most hostile times. Immediately establishes Moore as an absolute master of his craft – a story teller and visual artist who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as masters such as Michel Ocelot and Sylvain Chomet.”

Also a nice Mother and son review we found on the the web:
“My son (6) and I went to see this movie today. It was a great relief for me not to be watching the usual computer generated animation of childrens films. The images were beautiful and the story held both of our interest as well as providing for interesting future discussions.
The six year old review.  ’It was a good film and I really liked the end. I liked the ink making scenes.’

  1. hi folks
I run Flip Animation Festival here in the UK and would love to screen the Secret of Kells. Any chance? Festival dates are

    many thanks
    Peter

  2. Naomi Cassidy says:

Trailer of The Secret of Kells looks great, I would like to buy two copies, one for my nephew, and one for my Leaving cert Art class. Is the dvd available in shops, I haven’t seen it. Thanks and continued success with it.

  3. I was at the design presentation at the KLIK animation festival in Amsterdam but I missed the Film. Are there more screenings planed in Holland or Belgium or does the movie have a cinema release in Belgium. Here in Holland I can buy the DVD at the 25th of this month but I really want to see it on a big screen.

    Thanks for your time

    Maarten Prins

  4. Christopher says:

I was suggested to see TSOK at the Children’s Film Festival in London very recently by a friend, and I was tremendously glad that I did. Undoubtedly the best traditionally animated movie of the year – great design, beautiful animation and a story that really reels you in along with its characters. Highly inspiring and well worth the wait. Big round of applause for everyone who helped to make this film :D

  5. Aisling says:

I can’t wait to watch this movie! I really hope it will be released in Mexican cinemas.

    Greetings,

    Ash

  6. John Occhiuto says:

Where can I buy or see Secret of Kells? This film looks fantastic!

  7. Lheeran says:

Hi lads! I’m Lisa, you’ll likely not remember me, but I was a YIFM goblin not too long ago – I’m in Canada and desperately want to show off the Secret of Kells to the Canucks round here – any news on availability of the DVD in this part of the world??

  8. Marqus says:

You are the most creative group of people in the world!!! Your work is so fresh, full of soul, new and amazingly beautifull… Every segment of it… I’m so glad that somebody like you appeared! And don’t be selfish not to share your gift with us… ;)
And be proud of your work cause you did the best job ever!
    Salute…

  9. Amanda Richardson says:

I’ve seen the trailer so many times on my laptop it ran out of battery… And then I downloaded it onto my iPod and it made me miss my tube stop. Twice. Can’t wait for the film…

If I knew there was animation of this quality in the UK I would have stalked you guys long ago. Your jobs page says that you aren’t currently accepting submissions for new films, I have two waiting when you change your mind.

Very well done and thank you for existing,

    Amanda

  10. Iris G. says:

Congratulations on returning Animation it’s rightful place in cinema as an art form!!! My sister and I have been waiting for this movie to come to Canada (outside of Quebec) for so long! We’ve even bought the OST, and we’re waiting for the DVD (in region 1).

I was wondering, though – several trailers feature music not on the soundtrack – is there a way to get a listing of music used in the trailers?

    Thanks!

  11. Susan says:

We watched “Secret of Kells” on Sunday, and my son (7) has fallen in love with Aisling. We had to print out a picture to hang up by his bed so he could “maybe dream about her”. None of the other movies we’ve watched have captured his imagination (and heart) this way. Well done!

I loved it as well! Was there any influence from Genndy Tartakovsky’s art?

  12. Juano says:

Juano – Dir. de Arte Digital (Argentina).
